Some of the Adaptec SCSI cards won’t allow a G4 to go to sleep. As of 1/22/02, the 2906 needs a driver (software) update. The 2930 card needs an EPROM chip upgrade (you take off a chip on the card and send it back to Adaptec for a replacement). Several other cards are not compatible with deep sleep on G4s. Also, be sure to check the generation of G4 – AGP or GigE.

Are PowerDomain SCSI cards compatible with the ‘Deep Sleep’ feature of G4 Macs?

My G4 won’t wake up from “deep sleep” power management mode when my PowerDomain SCSI card is installed. I have to force a restart on my system. Are PowerDomain SCSI cards compatible with the ‘deep sleep’ feature of G4 Macs?

Apple’s new PowerMac G4 and original PowerMac G4 series offers a feature called “Deep Sleep.” This feature allows the PowerMac logic board to turn off power PCI cards in order to conserve energy. All Adaptec PowerDomain SCSI cards are compatible with Apple’s PowerMac G4 series but some are not compatible with this new “Deep Sleep” feature. On the original G4s if your SCSI card is not compatible with this feature, Mac OS 9 will simply alert you to this fact when it is brought out of sleep mode. On the new G4s the computer will hang at a grey screen when you try to wake the system if the card is not compatible.

If you are using a compliant Adaptec SCSI card and your system crashes or freezes when waking from “Deep Sleep” mode, then most likely:
A. You have a new G4 running at 466 Mhz, 533 Mhz, 677 Mhz, 733, 800 or 867 Mhz (single or duel processor) with a 133 Mhz Bus.
B. You have a PowerDomain 29160 or 29160N with a narrow device attached. We are looking into the issue and will update this article as soon as we have more information.
C. You are running Mac OS 8.6 on your PowerMac G4. The Mac OS is supposed to check fo
